CMMI® Compliant Measurement – A Workshop to Advance Your Measurement Initiative

Overview
Organizations using the SEI Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI®) as a framework for their process improvement program often struggle with establishing and maintaining a measurement program that is effective, efficient and compliant with CMMI. The use of measurements is a key component of any CMMI-based process improvement program, because measurements are needed to successfully satisfy a number of CMMI specific and generic practices across various Process Areas as well as the Measurement and Analysis Process Area. In addition to addressing CMMI specific and generic practices, it is important to ensure that measurements adequately address the business needs and provide sufficient process data for monitoring and evaluating the gains made from any process improvement initiative.

The Process Measurement Workshop provides a facilitated training and coaching experience for individuals, who are involved with the establishment and maintenance of an organization’s measurement program. This is an opportunity to learn how to satisfy the CMMI requirements for measurement among the various Level 2 and Level 3 Process Areas. This interactive workshop will identify and meet specific measurement needs and provide the techniques necessary to identify the right measures for the attendees’ organization.

DCG’s measurement program principles and best practices are based on the CMMI Level 2 Process Area – Measurement and Analysis (M&A) (www.sei.cmu.edu) and incorporate the Practical Systems and Software Measurement (PSM) basics (www.psmsc.com). DCG is an authorized SEI Transition Partner (www.sei.cmu.edu) as well as a Practical Software and Systems Measurement (PSM) Transition Partner (www.psmsc.com).

About This Workshop and What Participants Will Learn
This 2-day CMMI measurement focused workshop will provide training and coaching using an interactive approach. We will help attendees to define the overall scope of their organizations’ M&A Program and identify which organizational process changes are required to fulfill CMMI measurement and analysis requirements.

Participants will develop a set of CMMI®-compliant measures that also support their busines’ goals and objectives. Measures will focus on project-related needs as well as organizational needs.

Upon completion, participants will have:

  • Learned what is necessary to implement a CMMI compliant measurement program
  • Identified a set of specific measures that satisfy CMMI Level 2 and Level 3 specific and generic practices
  • Gained an understanding of the purpose and goals of the M&A Process Area
  • Detailed what standard process changes should be made in order within their organization to achieve compliance with CMMI
  • Developed an executable measurement implementation plan

Who Should Attend
Information Technology Managers, Measurement and Metrics Specialists, Program and Project Managers, CMMI SEPG or Process Action Team (PAT) Leaders and Software Engineering Professionals

Workshop Outline

DAY 1: Client Program Introduction, Overview Sessions, CMMI Measurement Requirements – Scaled to a client’s needs, the workshop offers a number of options for getting started. The session begins with an introduction by the client of their current measurement activities. In the afternoon, CMMI requirements for measurements, including General and Specific Practices, are reviewed, and specific measures are identified for the participant’s organization to use that would satisfy the CMMI Level 2 and 3 Process Areas.

MORNING – Introduction and Overview Presentations
Client Measurement Program Introduction – a high level of view of current measurement activities

Options

  1. Executive Overview – The Importance of Measurement
  2. CMMI Overview
  3. CMMI Level 2 Measurement and Analysis Process Area Overview

EARLY AFTERNOON – Establishing a CMMI Compliant Measurement Program

  • Purpose and Goals
  • Benefits
  • Specific Practices & Generic Practices

LATE AFTERNOON – Measurement Solutions – Project Level Measures
For each Specific and Generic Practice requiring measurements in a Process Area, a discussion is facilitated using these diagnostic questions:

  1. What aspect of the attendees’ measurement program is currently compliant with this practice?
  2. What measurement requirements aren’t being met?
  3. What would be a reasonable process change or addition to the organization’s process that would support business needs and be CMMI compliant?

For each Process Area, we examine what the organization is currently measuring, what additional activities are necessary and practical for the organization and what steps would be necessary to implement a complete solution.

DAY 2: Measurement Solutions – The workshop continues with the identification of specific measures to satisfy each CMMI Level 2 and Level 3 Process Area for both project and organizational measures.

MORNING – Measurement Solutions – Project Level Measures (cont’d) and Organizational Measures
A common sense approach for satisfying each needed project level measurement is presented as an example of what is required. The following project level Process Areas are considered: CM, SAM, PP/PMC/IPM, (RM), Req.M, Engineering

Organizational level measurements address the following Process Areas: OPD, OPF, PPQA, OT

AFTERNOON – Measurement Program Implementation Planning
Discussion of Priorities and Recommendations – a facilitated exercise is held to identify and prioritize the critical gaps for the organization’s measurement program and possible solution strategies.

Action Planning – a facilitated session is held to define possible implementation strategies to address the measurement program gaps including the resources required.

Development of a measurement plan outline.
