2009: Year of
Opportunity?
2008 was a tough year for a lot of
business and individuals. 2009 looks like a challenging
year as well but could also be a year of opportunity.
When business conditions are favorable, internal
weaknesses can be masked. For example, I was in a chain
clothing store recently and asked if they were concerned
about the marketplace given that their largest
competitor was closing hundreds of stores. I was
surprised at the answer.
"No, as a matter of fact
we are opening two new stores in the area." They went on
to explain that they open and fund stores on a cash
basis only and use credit differently. Obviously, that
management team learned from prior boom/bust cycles,
changed their processes and are now in an excellent
position to gain new customers and marketshare. The
store closings are a final verdict on the other
management team's weaknesses that could not be
masked by good times.
Assertive leaders continue
to help their companies improve especially when times
are tough. This is borne out by the recent CIO Insight
survey where even more than last year
improvement is a top priority. This year can be a year of opportunity
where you can finally address long-standing frustrations
and challenges such as getting your projects completed
on-time and on-budget, reducing defects and managing
costs. While everyone is "committed" to
continuous improvement, nothing is more evident of
actual desire that a defined process improvement project
or pilot with an actual budget and stated deliverable.
