SPOTLIGHT

ARTICLE

Our Spotlight this month is on Leveraging Lean Philosophies in Your CMMI Implementation

Implementing the CMMI can take many paths which range from classic plan driven implementations to implementations that embrace agile practices. Regardless of the path you have chosen, embracing lean philosophies can fundamentally improve the effectiveness, efficiency and acceptance of the processes you implement.

One Size Fits ..... Someone Other Than Me

Changing human behavior and software engineering mechanics is a messy business despite the theorists' best efforts to define a single model that can best guide organizations.  This is because both are inherently non-linear, if for no other reason than humans are involved.  It is well known that any system no matter how carefully constructed is inherently non-linear if it includes humans and that combining two or more non-linear systems will yield chaos (eventually).  DCG has long recognized that to avoid the frightened users and cranky managers created when chaos ensues, organizations must apply controls (in the form of management theories, models, methodologies and tools) to make the system Tom Cagley, VP Process Improvement & Measurementmore predictable. Our experience however is that one whole model is rarely effective or sufficient for providing the stability and predictability needed to prosper in a sea of chaos.

An IT Industry Perspective
DCG's Value Visualization Framework, which will be discussed in an upcoming webinar (see Upcoming Events below), speaks directly to the following study, as reported in the Wall Street Journal:

"According to a study by Diamond Management & Technology Consultants Inc., of Chicago, 87% of business leaders say they believe that IT is critical to their companies' strategic success.

The study finds that few businesses have yet positioned IT in a way that allows it to achieve this.  Only 33% of business leaders say IT is very involved in developing their company's CMMI Bar Chart 2006-07strategy, and 30% say the business executive in charge of strategy works closely with IT, according to the Diamond study.  That has an impact on performance:  76% of companies say they have had to abandon a tech project, including 29% that say they have abandoned more than 10% of these projects, according to the Diamond Study."
