Executive Coaching: Developing the Future CIO
by Marilyn Edelson and David Herron
A recent report from the Society for Information Management Advanced Practices Council, “Grooming the 2010 CIO", predicted a shortage of qualified CIOs in the years ahead. In a thought-provoking article "The Looming CIO Shortage”, CIO Insight, 3/12/07) the authors postulated a growing demand for CIOs that is most likely not going to be properly met with a ready supply of well trained and talented executives. Furthermore, the article emphasized that the role of the CIO is evolving. A CIO is expected to be a leader with confidence, vision and energy to drive change.
Coaching was one particular approach suggested in the article that addressed the need to develop CIOs from within by proactively developing the skills and talents necessary to be a top notch CIO. While it is widely accepted that, along with training and mentoring, coaching can help address 'performance gaps,' we were interested in learning what some of today’s CIOs would say about the article.
We interviewed three C-Level executives: two CIOs and one former IT CEO, who is now an Executive Coach. Each of the three were asked the same fundamental questions, but we left room for their unique inputs. We picked a cross-section of industries and companies to see if there was consistency in their views.
In this article, we have captured highlights of those interviews. The interviewees discussed the necessary skills a CIO requires today and into the future. And they shared their thoughts and strategies for succession planning. We conclude this article with suggestions regarding the impact Executive Coaching can have on developing the future CIO.
Our first interviewee was Rosalee Hermens, CIO of The Timberland Company, a global leader in design, engineering and marketing of premium outdoor footwear apparel and accessories, known as well for a strong commitment to social justice and partnering with communities to transform social conditions.

Master carpenters have been teaching their apprentices for many years the adage, 'measure twice, cut once' as a best practice for ensuring quality workmanship. However, the design and construction of software is not something that is so easily measured. Or is it? In this webinar with Tom Cagley of DCG, you will find out how to measure your development efforts twice so that the end deliverables you produce are on time, on budget and high quality.
Measure Twice, Implement Once will walk attendees through a process of developing a metrics program that is tool for those who are interested in projects and their results - a tool that supports project estimation and provides scaffolding for decision support. Measures and metrics are not an answer in their own right; rather they act as a set of guideposts from which we can judge behavior. Measures as a communication tool help defeat the pundits that know so little about so much by implementing the scientific method within project management.
- How to construct a metrics program focused on projects:
- Leveraging social media
- Using the scientific method
- Serving as a tool for transitions
- The use of measures to triage project opportunities
- Using measures for fact based estimation
- The use of facts in monitoring, controlling and killing projects
- Using metrics as a decision support tool while avoiding paralysis
