DCG expands IT management consulting with the
introduction of the IT Capability Maturity Framework
|

|
Recently we
sat down with Mike Harris, DCG's CEO and Alan Cameron, DCG's
Director of the European market to discuss the impact of
introducing the IT-CMF service to DCG clients. In a wide
ranging discussion, the benefits to CIOs and CFOs became
apparent. The following is an edited transcript of the
interview.
|

|
Alan, what is the IT-CMF?
Alan:
It is a comprehensive program created by the Innovation Value
Institute (IVI), a group of well-respected CIOs, CFOs, IT vendors
and IT academics to ensure the deliverability of IT's business
value. There are 36 processes critical to IT that have been
identified and best practices have been defined for each.
The framework is mapped onto an organization's IT department and
a scoring method is utilized to identify their organization's
maturity for each process across 5 levels. Improvement
targets and approaches are defined to create or improve
value.
Mike,
there are plenty of frameworks such as CMMI and ITIL. What
is so good about IT-CMF?
Mike: It's about focus - management focus -
making IT into part of the business and capable of driving profit
and value. No more should IT be seen as a service that simply
costs money, or as a drag on the business.
IT-CMF is not another technical tool, nor is it a process panacea
or a new programming language. Instead it complements
technical developments with the aim of enfolding IT into the
business. Not only does IT-CMF help execs focus on
effective spend, it does it by asking the business what matters
at all levels, connecting boards with end users in a way that
benefits the whole fabric of the business. It complements
technical and quality frameworks and there is now a memorandum of
understanding between IVI and CMMI indicating how the two
frameworks can complement each other
Alan, how is it applied?
Alan:
IT-CMF is applied in a way that makes it inclusive at executive
level and on the ground with real users. It's not all or
nothing either; an organization can apply what is best for its
own purposes.
First is the executive assessment, and this is where we in DCG
will initially be focusing. This is a fast initial
assessment of the state of a company. The results when
compared against the IVI database show how a company distributes
its IT effort in relation to other companies. Crucially, it can
demonstrate not only where there is a lack of focus, but also
where there may be too much. This alone can indicate to
executives what they need to concentrate on, and in turn may lead
to adoption of the wider processes and move on to deep dives, the
next stage.
Through deep dives, IT-CMF also addresses the user population to
get their opinions, one of its most powerful features, and one
that can drive huge cost savings and improvements. This
works in major and smaller corporations.
Alan,
what is the IVI?
Alan: The IVI is a consortium of leading industry, consulting,
not-for-profit and academic organizations collaborating to create
the global standard to realise the business value from IT
investments. This consortium consists of a global collection of
like- minded organisations committed to developing better models,
tools and practices to optimally manage the Business Value of IT
and IT Innovation practices. This distinctive collaboration will
provide a unique environment for the synthesis of leading
industry best practices and pioneering academic output, training
and education, far beyond what any one entity could hope to
achieve by itself. You read more at the IVI website.
Mike,
tell me more about the IT-CMF and DCG
Mike: DCG is joining the IT-CMF consortium as a
Contributor. Alan Cameron, Tom Cagley, Vice President, Consulting
Services, and myself will be able to offer the Executive
Assessment to our clients. Our aim is to offer this service
starting October 2011.
We face challenging times economically, and all companies are
very focused on cost. Slash and burn seems tempting, but a
focused approach to effective spending is much more
appropriate. IT-CMF enables that focus and hence my
excitement.
