Co-authored book by DCG
Expert prescribed to University of Denmark Students
The Book titled Mastering Software Project Management by Thomas
M. Cagley, Jr. and Murali Chemuturi has become the primary
resource for the IT University of Copenhagen in Denmark course
"Systems Development and Project Organization."
As
David Herron, DCG VP, commented, "When a software project
fails, the impact to an organization can be significant.
The losses the organization experiences may be financial, the
project's failure may negatively impact the organization's
credibility with customers, the organization may lose
market position and competitive advantage. Statistics from
the 2009 Standish Group CHAOS report state that 44% were
challenged and were late, over budget, and/or with less than the
required features and functions." It is safe to assume
that in nearly all of these failures project management played at
least a minor role.
It
is essential that software development organizations focus their
attention on improving the state of their project management
practices. DCG's Tom Cagley and the DCG Team of experts
have enough collective experience and understanding to help
your IT organization apply software project management best
practices.

PMO Survey Results
The
results are in! On April 28th, David Herron, VP DCG, presented
the findings from the recent DCG industry Survey on PMO's.
The analysis of the survey responses provided valuable insights
to the current state of PMOs. The following is a sample of the
observations and findings from the survey.
Organizationally, PMOs tend to be more centralized (71%) in their
operation. The majority (68%) of PMOs support the business in
addition to servicing IT project management needs. Business
related support typically includes business-IT optimization and
risk mitigation.
When asked about the value contribution of the PMO over the past
two years, 62% of the respondents noted that PMOs had increased
their value to the organization. Several organizations (11%)
noted a decline in service. These organizations tended to have
fewer staff than average (less than 8 PMO resources) while
supporting large organizations with many projects. In contrast,
we found that those PMOs that were providing added value, where
also rated as higher maturity organizations with adequate
staffing levels in the PMO.
Finally, one of the more interesting findings was that the
majority of PMOs (75%) responded that they needed to better
define the role of the PMO particularly as it relates to agile
project support. As a result of this finding, the second half of
the webinar focused on how PMOs can more effectively support
agile projects and included a sampling of agile metrics focusing
on productivity, quality, predictability and value. To read the
full report, click here. You can view a recording
