Measurement in the Software Industry
The software industry has become increasingly aware of the need to measure itself. As organizations pursue better software management, they recognize the urgency for process improvement strategies and the measurement of business value.

Analysis has shown that there are four common domains of metrics programs within the software industry. Each of these domains has certain attributes that are common to that particular domain and indicate a level of maturity for a metrics program. These four levels of metrics maturity are:
