What is IT-CMF?

IT-CMF is a framework of macro capabilities with underlying critical capabilities designed to assist companies to get the highest value from their IT organizations in a way that is most appropriate for each one.

IT-CMF is a framework built in collaboration between industry and academia and the control organization is the Innovation Value Institute (IVI) part of the National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM). Steering Patrons are Intel, Boston Consulting Group and IVI. Other Patrons include BP, SAP and Ernst and Young along with a group of contributors such as DCG who together continue to refine the model.

Do you Qualify?

IT-CMF is not for every organization. Scale is required to leverage the benefits and when IT is a separate organization from the business. Organizations with around 100-500 employees will implement IT-CMF differently than one with more than 1,000 employees. Attitude and commitment are also required to start this journey. A strong leadership culture with a will to foster productive change is a must. Unfocused corporate families that argue the urgent but ignore the important will struggle at the outset.

What is so good about IT-CMF?

It’s about focus – management focus – making IT a more integral part of the business and capable of driving profit and value. It allows IT to be seen as a more effective component that generates profits and adds more value to the business.

IT-CMF is not another technical tool, nor is it a process panacea or a new programming language. This tool helps you first identify capabilities within your company where there may be too little (or too much) emphasis, and then it enables you to focus on the areas which are of most importance for your business. It is designed to be used regularly to track progress on improvements and to identify where there is still room for improvement.

IT-CMF complements technical developments with the aim of enfolding IT into the business. IT-CMF helps executives focus on effective spend, by asking the business what matters at all levels, thereby connecting boards with end users in a way that benefits the whole fabric of the business.
