Case Study 3
Top 10 US Bank achieves 60% saving in projected costs by managing large scale project with metrics.
When a Top 10 US bank decided to develop a new ACH processing system to meet market demands, it turned to functional sizing metrics to help manage development time and cost to a successful conclusion.
Increasing demand for automated transactions created a new market for the bank. However existing ACH systems had transaction performance in the millions per day and the bank projected needs in the millions per hour. When initial estimates of development costs came in at $20 million, the bank turned to a local software development firm, Computer Management Sciences, Inc (CMSI) for alternatives.
CMSI, a regional software consultancy and development firm was using functional sizing and estimating based function points to size and manage projects that were significant in scale and scope. CMSI had taken training from the experts at David Consulting Group and implemented advanced large project management techniques.
After a feasibility study of the Bank’s ACH functional requirements which included a function point count and estimate by CMSI and DCG, a new revised budget of $8 million was presented. This new budget figure, backed by the objective functional sizing data provided by DCG, proved to the Bank that they could get the system they wanted at the right price. Two years and 60,000 hours of development time later, the project was delivered on-time and on-budget.
